Teacher Training

The International House World Organisation (IHWO) is a network of language schools worldwide that are committed to implementing high standards of quality and innovation in education and training. There are currently over 150 schools in 50 countries.

International House developed the first training courses for teachers of English and has continued to innovate both in pre-service training and teacher development. Globally, the language teachers that we train are acknowledged as amongst the most able, creative and authoritative within their profession. Our teacher training programmes are a hallmark of excellence and outstanding professionalism.

Whether you would like to take an initial training qualification as an English Language teacher, or would like to improve and develop yourself as an English teacher, we have a course for you.

Cambridge CELTA

The Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Adults (CELTA) is an introductory course for candidates with little or no previous English Language teaching experience. It is also suitable for candidates with some experience but little previous training. As a qualification that is recognised around the world, it gives you the skills you need and opens up a whole world of exciting teaching opportunities.

The CELTA:

  • teaches you the principles of effective teaching
  • provides a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners
  • gives you hands-on teaching practice
  • builds your confidence.

There are five main units of learning:

  • Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Planning and resources for different contexts
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism.

 Certificate in Advanced Methodology (CAM)

The International House Certificate in Advanced Methodology (CAM) serves two main audiences.  It offers the high level of methodological input which (1) many teachers seek for reasons of personal self-development and (2) many teachers need as preparation for a Diploma level qualification such as the Cambridge DELTA.

Because of the high level of input involved, the course is aimed at teachers with at least one year’s full-time experience (600 clock hours of teaching).  The focus of the course is General English to Adults.

Course aims:

·         To develop teachers’ theoretical knowledge of teaching and so make them more informed practitioners.

·         To develop teachers’ practical teaching ability and develop their self-analytical skills to make them more reflective practitioners.

·         To raise teachers’ awareness of what they can expect from a Diploma level course and explicitly prepare them to take one.

There is some classroom observation and action research involved, so participants should be teaching general English to classes of adults at a variety of levels in a school while undertaking the course.

IH Business English Teaching Certificate (BET 1)

The International House Business English Teaching Level 1 course (BET 1) is a 50 hour course consisting of 30 hours of input and 20 hours of homework (reading or action research) tasks, plus a post-course reflection. It is aimed at either newly-qualified teachers (post-CELTA/IHCTL) or more experienced teachers who are new to teaching Business English. Successful completion of the course will earn participants an IHWO certificate and also prepare them to take the LCCI FTBE exam (London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Further Certificate for Teachers of Business English) should they wish further accreditation.

The course has three strands: Basic Business Awareness; Professional Skills; Methodology & Materials, aiming to raise participants' awareness of business topics, dealing with students as clients, and teaching business language within a business context.

Certificate in Teaching Young Learners  (IHCYL)

The main aim of this course is to prepare teachers for working with Young Learners. Usually these teachers will already have had some form of pre-service training in the teaching of ELT to adults (e.g. IHCTL/CELTA) but some may not have had previous experience of teaching Young Learners.

The course's main objective is to introduce trainees to, and help them (re) evaluate and (re) consider the main principles involved in teaching English to Young Learners in a typical language school context.

The course contains 20 sessions that develop skills in specialized areas of teaching Young Learners, including Classroom Management; Child Development; Teaching Adolescents and Lesson Planning.
